FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT MATH SUMMER INSTITUTE
Who is this summer institute designed for?
Middle school and high school math teachers who wish to increase the level of engagement from students, diversify their instructional techniques, and make themselves more effective and marketable as math teachers.
Must I be a classroom teacher in order to register for this summer institute?
Anyone who wishes to see these hands-on activities, games, and other pedagogical techniques is welcome. We turn none away.
Is there a virtual option?
Unfortunately no. Half of the summer institute focuses on hands-on activities which are best taught and practiced in person, as are the math-based games that take up another quarter of the session. It would not be feasible to offer participants a quality session through a virtual means.
WHO IS PRESENTING?
This year's Math Summer Institute is presented by John Frensley. John Frensley has worked closely with physics teachers to help them make their classes more hands-on and engaging, and is excited to bring his methods to math teachers. The cabinets in Mr. Frensley's classroom are filled with toys, sports equipment, and other fun items, and he envisions math teachers being able to use those same toys to teach and reinforce math concepts. John also wants to share math-based games, alternative assessment techniques, and ways to integrate writing and scientific reasoning into the math classroom.
John is excited to work with teachers to help them improve, and also to learn neat things from them. John's primary goals for his session this summer are:
To help participant teachers become more effective in the classroom.
To help participant teachers become more marketable as they advance in their careers.
To help participant teachers have greater job satisfaction by making their classes more fun and exciting.
